Insurance Ethics

Course Description

The course begins by examining the concept of ethics in general and in reference to the insurance industry. The course examines the origin of ethical standards and how they can be applied in the everyday practice of insurance. While ethics has the academic and philosophical discussions, this course focuses more on the practical considerations for insurance professionals and practitioners.

Course objectives

  1. To discuss decisions and action of practitioner of insurance and their consequences on the stakeholders.
  2. To examine the objectives of ethics codes and provide several examples of codes of ethics
  3. To describe the responsibilities and ethical obligations of an insurance employee

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course students will be able:

  1. To understand the concept of ethics and its relevance in society and business
  2. To appreciate the key terminologies that builds the ethical practice
  3. To explain the ethical behavior as it relates to the insurance industry and discuss implications and obligations of insurance professional
  4. To illustrate examples of professional behavior and compare ethical behavior among several corporations
  5. To define ethics in a general business context and in insurance organizations
